Type of execution

Tolerances:

  • Inner length (L): +/- 2.00 mm
  • Wall thickness* (s): +/- 0.25 mm

* In order to be able to produce round caps with an undercut made of soft PVC in a reliable process, we require an undercut length for production, depending on the internal length. Minimum wall thickness of 1.2 mm.
We will be happy to inform you of the planned minimum wall thickness in our meaningful offers with.

Article features

  • We only use soft PVC from the Covytec ® material series for the production of round caps.
  • Round caps with an undercut are usually manufactured from Covytec® 0542 in approx. 60° Shore A, but can be produced in other degrees of hardness.
  • The production of the preferably semi-transparent caps with an inner bead ensures controlled and extremely secure installation
  • There is a choice of 8 semi-transparent and 9 fully dyed standard colours; other special colours on request
  • Free product samples of most sizes are available from stock
  • Clean and safe thanks to the absence of saline heat transfer media
  • Detectability, increased UV protection and ESD capability are optional material properties and are only possible with fully dyed colours.

Application examples

  • Profile protection
  • Cable protection
  • Cap for cable lug
  • Protective cap
  • Cover cap

PVC caps with undercut represent a Further development which also light and to be mounted securely StandardRound caps represent.

The rubber-flexible Covytec ® soft PVC types are already the ideal material for use as protective and end caps in many industrial applications. Industries like the Automotive industry  the Electrical engineering and the Wire and cable industry. However, the use of different coloured, semi-transparent PVC of the type Covytec® 0542  come further, extremely remarkable features and benefits which have the dipped protective caps with undercut.

The slightly transparent cable protection caps coded with semi-transparent colours

help the fitter to recognise immediately whether the cap is fitted to the correct cable and in the correct end position. A small bead of material on the inside makes it noticeably easier to snap the cap into place. In the case of caps produced with semi-transparent colours, it is also easy to see whether the cap has latched correctly into the groove provided in the component, for example in the case of a cable lug, to prevent loss

Process description - Production of PVC caps with undercut using the dipping process

In contrast to the injection moulding process, only a relatively small amount of tooling and production machinery is required to produce round PVC caps with an undercut. In contrast to injection moulding, the dip mould, which is produced with few resources in our own tool shop, is heated in an oven and then dipped directly into a tank filled with liquid PVC.
When the hot mould comes into contact with the liquid PVC paste, also known as plastisol, a skin forms on the outer contour of the grooved round cores, which forms the desired wall thickness, including the desired material thickening, by the end of a defined dwell time in the PVC paste. The wall thickness of the cap to be achieved depends on the temperature of the mould, the dwell time of the mould in the dip tank and the viscosity of the PVC material. The inner length of the caps is controlled by the immersion depth of the mould cores.
After removing the dipping tool from the dip tank, the excess PVC material runs and drips off, whereby drop formation at the closed end of the caps cannot be completely avoided.

The mould with the PVC layer is then heated again in order to achieve the rubber-elastic properties of the PVC material. This work step is often referred to as gelling.

After cooling, the caps can be removed from the cores using an auxiliary tool.

Material

The standard soft PVC used by HAMCO from the Covytec® material series, which is preferably processed in 60 Shore A, but also in other degrees of hardness, exhibits a high degree of hardness regardless of the selected hardness. Standard or special colour has sufficient elasticity for secure installation.

The flexibility of the Covytec® PVC type ensures that the barely noticeable elongation is immediately restored after assembly and the material bead settles into the intended groove of the component.

Both the Static friction as well as from the elongation of the material centrally acting compressive forces provide a captive hold of the fitted caps.

In the wider context of food industry PVC protective caps can only really be used when a detectability of the PVC material is guaranteed. However, detectability can only be offered as an option for fully dyed colours.

Material

  • Soft PVC, approx. 60° Shore A (other hardnesses and special versions on request)

Important quality information

The Wall thickness is measured non-destructively at the open end of the cap.
Due to the process, it continuously increases towards the closed end of the immersed caps.
Drain marks and drain drops on the closed one can also not be completely avoided due to the process.
