Steam sterilisation is essential for the hygiene of medical instruments such as surgical instruments. In steam sterilisation, hot, saturated steam is used under high pressure to kill microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores on the surgical instruments. Plastic caps are used to protect the delicate surgical instruments during the sterilisation process. These caps prevent the sharp blades and cutting edges from being damaged during sterilisation or staff from injuring themselves.
Innovative caps from HAMCO for optimum safety
HAMCO provides for customers from the Medical technology sector custom-fit caps made from medical dipping paste. The material is heat-resistant, moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable, making it ideal for use during steam sterilisation. The caps protect the blades and cutting edges during steam sterilisation and also ensure that employees are protected from puncture and cut injuries when handling the cutlery.
The challenge: Combining protection and permeability
A particular challenge in the development of the caps was the fact that, on the one hand, a protective function is required, but on the other hand, the sterilisation steam must also reach the instruments. The solution is a cap with internal nubs that provide the necessary distance to allow the steam to pass through. After the development phase at HAMCO, the prototype was successfully tested before series production was started.
