Plastic handles for Hand tools are used in many industries, for example to insulate, improve grip or protect components from chemicals and corrosion. Safe handling with insulated pliers handles is particularly essential in the electrical industry.
What is the 2-component technique?
A special manufacturing process is 2-component technology (2K technology): Plastic parts are made from different materials in order to combine different material properties in one product. This means that a tool handle can be robust, non-slip and insulating at the same time.
HAMCO is using this technology in a project for the Electrical industry on. For greater safety during use, pliers handles are coated with two different materials. The materials differ in terms of both colour and feel.
More safety thanks to coloured wear detection
Here, the 2-component process ensures greater safety when handling the tool: if the upper, slightly roughened layer is worn, a different coloured, smooth layer can be seen and felt underneath. This allows the user to notice in good time if the wall thickness of the coating is reduced and thus the insulation protection of the tool deteriorates.
Layer by layer: the manufacturing process in detail
The bottom layer of HAMCO is produced with a standard dipping paste. A pearl profile in a different colour is applied on top, which has a slightly roughened surface. This combination creates a durable and secure grip that sounds the alarm in good time in the event of wear due to a colour change.
Variety of materials for injection moulding with 2K technology
In the Injection moulding process HAMCO offers a wide range of possible combinations with 2K technology thanks to our large selection of materials. Even the realisation of demanding component requirements and complex shapes can be implemented using injection moulding with 2K technology.
One example is the combination of hard PP and soft TPEThe combination of materials makes it possible to utilise the advantages of both materials in one component. This leads to products with:
- Hard and soft areas
- Improved mechanical properties
- Attractive design with colour combinations
2K moulds: Advanced technology
2K moulds are special injection moulds designed for the production of parts from two different plastic components in a single operation. The process is particularly efficient as only one machine is required. However, the process can also be used with two moulds, which are used one after the other: After the first injection process, the part is inserted into the next mould and overmoulded.
